New year, new job? With the new year often comes the thought of finding a new role. In fact, a recent survey found that 65% of professionals said that securing a new job is on their list of New Year’s resolutions.
Not sure where to start? We’ve put together a few handy tips to prepare for your job search this new year.
-
Review your CV
Now that the year is over, does your CV include your most recent achievements? It’s important to make sure it’s up to date and showcases your skills and experience. Now is also a good time to make sure your CV is ATS friendly (take a look here to find out more)
-
Update your LinkedIn and profiles on other job search sites
Now that you have reviewed and updated your CV, go through any websites you are registered with and make sure they are up to date; upload your new CV and make sure your profile information is consistent.
-
Find recruitment agencies that specialise in your industry experience
It might be tempting to register with every agency you find online, however if they do not specialise in the roles you are looking for, this could be a thankless task.
Specialist recruitment agencies like Kinetic, have a dedicated team with the right contacts in the industry, so are best placed to guide you through your job seeking journey – from advising you on the market to putting you forward for suitable roles. If you haven’t already, you can register with us here.
-
Make a list of companies you would like to work for
As well as working with recruiters and signing up to job boards – make a list of relevant employers you would like to work for and apply for suitable vacancies on their website – where there are none, check if there is an option to send or upload your CV or set up job alerts with them.
-
Network
Connect with hiring managers from your list on LinkedIn and send them a message informing them you are looking for a new role, highlight your experience and tell them why you would like to work for them.
-
Get organised
Now you have updated your profile and begun reaching out to people in the industry, you need to make sure you are organised so that you can stay on top of your job search. Keep a list of where you have sent your CV and what roles you have applied for and set reminders to follow up, whether that’s by email or phone.
-
Be available
While we are in the age of everyone being available at a click of a button, everyone has similar working days and hours. So, even if you are employed – you need to be prepared to be contacted by Recruiters or potential employers during your work time. If you can’t take the call – politely ask when works for them to call back and make sure you are free. If you have applied for a role, asking to be contacted outside of the employer’s work hours might signal you are not so serious about taking on a new position.
-
Keep going!
Remember not to be so hard on yourself throughout your search. There will be many people just as experienced as you are looking for a new role and unfortunately not everyone who applies can be selected for the role. Ask for feedback where possible and see if you can make any improvements along the way. Searching for a new role requires dedication and perseverance – keep applying, networking, and reaching out for opportunities.
