How much time in the last few months have you dedicated to checking or updating your LinkedIn profile? If like most of us, this is a job that always seems to make its way of to the end of your ‘to-do’ list, then you might not realise the extent of the career opportunities you could be missing.
There have been some significant changes on LinkedIn this year, meaning it has never been a better time to take advantage of this social business network for your life sciences job search.
It is now easier than ever to connect, share current articles and life sciences news with your industry contacts and make you stand out from the crowd.
In this article, I want to share with you some tested success strategies for creating a LinkedIn profile that will enhance your life sciences job search.
A Bigger Audience
If you’ve already got a LinkedIn profile, but it has done very little to help you with your life sciences career, you might be less inclined to be enthusiastic about the platform. But let me share some impressive statistics with you.
There has been a significant increase in the amount of LinkedIn users over the past year, which has meant that there are now 645 million members worldwide (with this number growing day by day).
This increased growth in users has had a remarkable impact on the success of job seekers using LinkedIn. In 2019 alone, over 122 million people received a job interview via LinkedIn.
While these stats speak for themselves, there have also been additional updated features such as the feature which notifies all of your connections when you share a great piece of content. If you avoid using your LinkedIn profile regularly, you could be missing out on impressing both the recruiters and potential employers with your life science sector knowledge.
Life Science Careers in the UAE
It has never been a better time to focus on developing your life sciences career in the UAE, as this sector enjoys enormous growth. The industry was worth 69.37bn AED in 2019, a 37% growth from 2014, with the Dubai Science Park and the mass production of pharmaceuticals in the area major contributing factors.
A white paper commissioned by the Dubai Science Park entitled ‘Innovation in life sciences: An emerging markets perspective’ highlighted that now is an exciting time for life science employees as medical technology and health informatics are a promising avenue for markets such as the UAE.
Earlier this year, a partnership agreement was signed by Dubai Science Park, which will bring new health technology innovators to the UAE from the United States. This has brought new trade deals and medical devices, pharma and life science companies to the Middle East.
So, how can life science employees take advantage of the timely growth in this sector by utilising the power of LinkedIn in their job search? Let me share with you some of my suggestions.
Using Your LinkedIn Profile for Life Science Job Opportunities
Here are my top tips for navigating LinkedIn in a way that will increase your job opportunities-
- Get out there and start making connections. Last year alone, there were 532,000 new businesses registered in the first half of the year. There are endless opportunities to make new professional connections; all it takes is to click the ‘connect’ button on their profile.
- Make good use of the ‘articles’ feature that I mentioned earlier. Once you have built a substantial network, sharing news articles and think pieces with current life science issues, or better still, writing and sharing your own articles will position you as an industry-trusted employee.
- Keep your profile updated with your current employment information, a current and professional picture, and make use of the ‘endorsements’ feature, which allows current and previous colleagues, managers and peers to endorse your skills within your field.
- A key point to remember when you are job searching is to avoid these overused words in your profile – specialised, experienced, leadership, skilled, passionate, expert, motivated, creative and successful.
